The factory main bolts are torque-to-yield hardware, stretched into their plastic range on the assembly line and sitting near their limit before you've added a single pound of boost. As cylinder pressure climbs, the main caps want to shuffle and lift microscopically under load. That cap chatter distorts the bearing bores, thins the oil film, and is how healthy bearings turn into wiped ones on a high-boost build.
These are not standard ARP fasteners. Custom Age 625+ is the strongest material in the ARP catalog, a nickel-based superalloy rated to 270,000+ psi tensile strength, roughly 50 percent beyond the 8740 chrome moly found in typical main bolt kits. That headroom allows a significantly higher torque spec and clamping preload than any factory or standard aftermarket fastener, while the bolt still operates well inside its elastic range. The caps stay registered under extreme cylinder pressure, the bearing bores stay round, and the bearings keep the oil film they need to survive. 625+ also brings superior fatigue life and corrosion resistance, and unlike the one-shot factory bolts, these torque to a known, repeatable preload and are fully reusable through teardowns and refreshes.
